Some shoot really good but have their quarks. I tried a load in my 243 Ulra (heavy barrel) and came up with a 3 shot group that measured .188 @ 100 yards, thinking this was just luck I loaded up some more and sighted in the scope. When the smoke cleared today I had a 7 shot group that you can cover with a dime @ 100 yards. But the same gun will NOT shoot 100 grain bullets at all, they all tumble (todays bullets were 85 grain).
Now if I can just get my 308 barrel to shoot like that I will a happy camper.

I was out playing around on saturday with some guys having fun. we set up playing cards at 200 yards. object to hit the center emblem of the card then shoot the two corner emblems. Time is the winning factor ( hit the card three times ). I "cheated", I shot the two corner emblems first then sent one down the pike in the middle. I was off by an inch to the left. The guy with the cheapest rifle single shot break action .223 wins. I just love watching $1200.00 worth of equipment come in second place. It's rarely the equipment that holds us back. Shooting is as much a mental game as anything else.

handi rifle .223
4-12 swift scope
harris bipod

My only modification was to strip the finish off the wood sand it dowm and refinish with boiled linseed oil.

Cheap they may be but they do shoot. My wife just bought be a Ruger #1, which is a great piece of work, both fit and finish, suggested retail $1,000. I am now trying to work up loads so that the Ruger will shoot as good as my H&R Handie Ultra, retail price $357. I must confess that the standard Handie stocks are a little bla, but the laminated Ultra stocks don't look bad.

Just remember to full lengh size the brass. Neck sizing results in stuck fired cases that are a pain to get out in the field.
When you get it clean it first especially the chamber. Also clean the grease that is packed in the ejector spring. That causes poor extraction also.
There is some NEF info at this link:

Did you try putting a "O" ring under the forearm? Place the O ring between the forearm and the steel lug that you screw the forearm to. this will float the barrel. You also might have to shoot it a few more times to break in the barrel. My 243 took a couple of boxes before it started behaving. Let us know how it goes.

A friend of mine owns one in .223 and its a good shooter. The only problem he has had with it was the ejector fails to remove the spent case if the load is a little to warm. And the only rounds he put through it that did that were some factory Winchester stuff. Go figure.

Sometimes,if you take a bore mop and a patch with some Flitz or JB paste on it and hook it up to a drill, you polish the chamber. If the chamber is not perfectly clean they will hang up. Your friend must have an older Handi, the new ones have extractors that are suppose to correct that problem. I like the older ones with ejectors, makes for a faster second shot, if it ejects.
