Are you folks having an difficulty getting primers? The local gun shops are running low on primers and getting backordered from their distributors. Some brands are not available to these gun shops. I have checked with a few friends in other areas and they report the same situation. Seems like 1992 all over again. Fortunately, I stocked up and can weather a dry spell. Take care...

Harrisburg and Allentown area gun shops that I visit are down to what primers are on the shelf. The story is that the government used up most of their ammo reserves and are having commercial factorys load ammo 24/7 to replenish their stragetic reserves. If you are not seeing primer shortages now, stand by, it may be on the way to your area. Take care...

Damn, that means we will have BIG shortages in Australia soon, if not already. Luckily I have a thousand or so to get me by.

Cheers, Vince

Federal landed a major contract with the government for primers, enough so that they had to divert some manufacturing to cover the contract. This created a shortage of Federal primers, mainly small rifle. The demand has been distributed to other primer suppliers, notably Winchester and CCI and has caught some wholesellers off guard.

Until a parity of product to demand can be established, there will likely be some gaps in particular primer availability.

My local gunshop is out of Federal Large RIfle Match primers and don't know when they'll be getting anymore.

I would have thought that the author of the article would have known who ATK is. I went to their big production, dealers only, dog and pony extravaganza at the Shot Show.

They are THE small arms ammunition manufacturers. They bought out Blount Ind. Then bought Federal, etc., etc. While everyone was sleeping they pretty much cornered the market on bullets and missiles. ATK is a retired General and a group of investors, mostly Generals who put together a business plan that all of the big banks and heavy lifters are fighting each other over, to lend them money. Step by step they have bought just about every company making munitions.

They are the single source for just about every munition used in the military, from 16 inch projectiles to the 22 LR and just about every sophisticated missile used by the US including the Sidewinder, AMRAM, Harpoon, Cruise Missiles and all of the anti-tank missiles. They own the only armory still producing military small arms ammunition, LC.

After watching their "movie" I was aghast that anyone could get in the position they are in. It looked to me like the brothers from Texas had just cornered the silver market and no one knew it. If ATK decides to stop selling ammo and componets to the sporting insustry, you would pretty much be out of the shooting game.

Go here read very carefully, if you do not come away with a "holy crap" feeling, I will eat my hat:

ATK is pretty big. Still I don't think they'll drop the commercial market. Smile

As for Lake City Ammunition Plant, they don't own it they simply run it under contract for the US Department of Defense. Smile

They own more then just Ammunition Related companies too look at their commercial company list:

Quote::
Major Products and Programs — Commercial

* Alliant Powder for reloaders and ammunition manufacturers
* CCI, Speer, Lawman, and Blazer ammunition; Speer bullets for reloaders
* Champion traps and paper, metal and clay targets
* Federal Premium, Fusion, and Estate Cartridge ammunition
* Gunslick and Outers gun care products
* Shooters Ridge rests, gear bags and speed loaders
* Ram-Line replacement stocks
* RCBS reloading equipment
* Weaver mounting systems

Humm apparently they are hiring machinists, maybe I should send them a copy of my resume and cover letter. Laughing

Dimitri

What SwampFox said...holy crap...I think whoever's "side" they're on would be the customer with the biggest checkbook, no?

I'm pretty sure they'll continue their commercial market, but when you talk about things like market parity..supply and demand...they're swinging an awful big hammer.

Anyone buying stocks? Personally my money's always tied up in gasoline futures (as in, can I afford to put gas in the car?) but I'd bet these guys are going to continue climbing...
