NEED SOME HELP! Just opened a can of IMR 4895 and when I poured it into my powder hopper, it looked strange. I checked and the powder is in minute flakes as well as spherical kernels. I have never used 4895 before and don't know if this is the way it is supposed to look. I tried IMR's website but it is down except for load database. Any suggestions would be appreciated. The can has never been opened before today.

IMR 4895 is a short tubular powder, no flakes, no spheres. However it happened, yours has been "contaminated" with at least two unknown powders. Either return it to where you bought it or toss it all in your flower garden. (Don't be surprised if the seller refuses to take it back, he will likely suspect YOU did the contamination and that's not unreasonable on his part. Some people do such things and then try to con the dealer into fixing their foul up.)

Crying or Very sad Thanks for the responses! I spoke with Hodgdon this morning. Very polite customer rep. but the bottom line with the company is they are not responsible for IMR powders before they purchased the company. He indicated that IMR did not manufacture any flake type powders so the contamination must have occurred somewhere else. He also said that they are finding a lot of the IMR powders manufactured in the 90's are going bad (in the cans). I checked the three cans (4831, 4064, and 7828)I bought last month, and found that they were made in 95. 97 and 2000 respectively. The 4895 was purchased in the last 3 years and just opened yesterday its lot number on the bottom the can is: E99AU5, followed by L7920. I will contact the shop I purchased the powder from and have them check their stock and open a can of the 4895 if they find one with the same lot number. If its contaminated, then I push the company to issue a recall.

The silvery tubular ones look like Varget. I load with IMR4350 and Varget for an 30-06 and this is the main differance between the two tubular powders.
