I thought Rock Island guns were old surplus (the majority dating back to WW2) made at the government arsenal in Il. Confused

Or are we talking about Rock River Arms ?? Confused

Dimitri

Rock River 1911s are among the best I've ever seen. And, their price reflects it. Most Rock Island (Hi Standard/Charles Daly -- same guns) 1911s become the gunsmith's best friend and they need some experienced hands on them to bring them to reliability and accuracy.

I have tried to do some research on the Rock Island and so far have found very little negative reviews so unless I find a better .45 in this price range I will most likley go with the Rock Island as a base gun.

Often a good choice for a basic starter is the Springfield Armory. Many of these are made by Imbel forging in Brasil. Their forgings are superb. A good used one can be had in the $450 range, condition dependent. You are right when you observe that, in the long run, you will spend more than if you were to buy a loaded 1911 in the first place, but, if it is experience you want, it is a good way to go.

Another great option is to buy a high quality frame and slide from Brownells. They sell a range of new frames and slides, even from Les Baer. Acquired piece by piece, the ending result could exceed that of the Rock Island or the Springfield Armory. Check them out on the web and compare carefully the price with the end result in mind.

Handloader is right on the money if you should choose to build one from the ground up. Essex frames are very durable also. They come in standard, oversize (for close-tolerance fitting) and enhanced (most commonly customized features). They are sturdy enough that they are listed as appropriate receivers for the .460 Rowland conversions. Older Springfield slides can sometimes be found and are incredibly tough. So much so that you can quickly wear out a grinder point lowering and porting them if needed!

Confused Confused Almost evry conversation I've been around dealing with Rock Island, there's confussion with who they are !!! Confused Confused

Joe,
Handloader and SSL are right on with advise on frame quality. As much as I don't like to admit it, the Springfield frames are better forgings.
Give it some thought, refer back to question #1

The Armscorp 1911's I have handled have been very acurate but were finiky about magazines and did not like to feed hollowpoints. Definitely need a throating and a trigger job but if you do your job they will shoot nice tight groups.

I own a Rock Island 1911. It shoots fine for what it is. Its a bare bones 1911 and will "bite" your hand if you grip it high just like the original. I've never had any real problems out of it. Some HPs fed a little funny when I got it. I added a heavier spring and have had no problems since. The sights are very basic.
