|
I got my 1868 Remington Rolling Block with a .45-70 28" barrel to the range today after a series of updates and modifications to renew and tighten up the action. You may have followed the issues I had with it in the two topic below. Evenones suggestions help work though issues that were new to me. Thanks!
Any suggestions for why this case failed?
Broken Case Extraction
The problem was a worn action that had 0.018 inches of excess headspace. Oversize roller pins helped tighten up the action but still left 0.005 of slack in the action and a breach block that was not perpendicular to the receiver. It fired ok but the primers were being pushed out about 0.010. To correct this, I could have taken it to a gunsmith and had the barrel set-back and rechambered. After talking with a shooting friend, I decided to move the breech block's hole aft 0.028 to move it forward and square it with the reciever. This was accomplished by offsetting a larger hole then inserting a bushing. I hand fitted the rest of the action. It was so tight that Winchester Brass (0.063 rim base) would fit and Starline (0.065 rim base) would not. Since I wanted to use the Starline, I filed off 0.002 on 10 cases, loaded them and took it to the range. This was my target at 50 yard - 1 MOA! The load was 41gr H4895 with 405 Oregon Trails Laser Cast Bullet.
This was much better than the 4 MOA had had before the breech block mod. Now that I know it can mature to a worth shooter, I have a motivation to fit and finish the fore stock.
Note, I had fitted the scope to improve accuracy. My eyes are too old to shoot open sights with enough accuracy to evaluate a load's potential.

Looks like your work paid big dividends. That is as good as I've seen some bolt action shoot.

Thanks!!! With the action being smooth again, I was amazed how simple it is to work. Cock the hammer, roll back the breech block, remove and replace cartridge, roll breech block forward and your ready to pull the trigger again.
Its been very easy to reload the spent cases/brass. No case sizing, no neck sizing, just press out the old primer, insert a new one, add powder charge, insert wade and bullet. It only takes a few seconds per round.

Thanks, gelandangan. It took me 40+ years to get the rifle this far. I guess a few more months finishing the stock and finalizing the sight configuration will be ok. At least I can be shooting it as I go.

I was going to say no but the answer is really not applicable. After trading all my good Winchester brass for Starline, I only had two Winchester case left, one was the base from the split case and another that I had modified to try and extract the front half of the split case. I could still use these two bases for fitting the action back together but not for reloading. Starline has impressed me. There cases are closer in weight than any of the cases I have for any of my rifles. I think they will last a long time.
