And is this just theoretical approach or based on tests? For me it's just marketing. I'm convinced that in these matters 'more' often means 'less'.

I would like to see them try to shoot a dove sitting in a tree on a 50 m distance (and the dove's head can face the shooter, because shooting at the tail would completely make it a lucky hit). Magnumitis is not the sollution here.

Aloy

Some of its marketing but this shell has a completely new design wad, at the bottom of the wad is a cone shaped cylinder that sits inside the primer pocket.
When the trigger is pulled, the wad actually starts to move first, than the main powder ignites. Last fall I shot plenty of geese and ducks in my 870 and never had a problem.

But my hunting buddy who used his mossberg 3" 12g suffered broken extractors twice when using the 3" loads. All my geese and ducks were pass thru shots except for 2 at 30-35 yards using 3 1/2" bb. One other thing I forgot to mention is that these hypersonic loads are alot louder than normal shotshells.

I think the biggest problem in using these rounds is the recoil, but todays shotguns weigh alot less than shotguns 25 years ago or more. Smile

Here is a new load from Winchester. I wonder if these pellets carry their velocity better than round shot. The drop of in velocity in in the link you provided OV1 was massive.

Yes I read about the ammo from Winchester, also found out that remington is pushing the limits with the hypersonic loads at close to 13,980 for the 3 1/2 loads and for the 3" it is at 11,400 to 11,500. Winchester is also doing the same with their "blindside" hex ammo in order to achieve fastest speeds out of the muzzle.

As you know Winchester 1 5/8oz loads step out at 1400fps verses Remington's 1 3/8oz 1700fps. But when we returned the mossberg to my buddies gunsmith for the 2nd time with a broken extractor, he asked if the speeds were worth it.

The bottom line is that I have shot upland game for just about 40 years and just wanted to try something new, never had a problem using my 2 3/4" or 3" reloaded shells, Like I said earlier in this post, I think I will stick with my reloads.

shot a hen parrie duck today at about 30yrs using a 3" gamebore #3 steel doing about 1550 fps through a modified steel choke. I think it may be a wee bit tight as the poor bird got 2 broken wings a broken leg and no less than 35 through n through hits to the body!!!!! Ive put my imp cyl choke in I think it may stay there for a while.

Same here Elvis, I probably get 95% of my game with the improved cylinder choke and full choke for turkey.

Was there anything left to eat? Any feathers still attached?

An interesting article in GUNS about shot velocity and recoil geeting to be too much in shotguns (pg 26).

Thanks for the link Slim, interesting article. As I said before in this thread, I'll stick with my handloads in shot shells, as I can tailor them to my likes. With a buddy of mine shooting the 3" hyper loads and 2 times back to the smith to get the extractor replaced on his mossberg was enough for me. Shocked

I still have 1/2 box of 3 1/2" hyper shells on the shelf in the gun cabinet sitting as I will not shoot these things anymore in my shotguns. To my astonishment a couple guys I know swear by them now. Shocked

Again what has worked for 50 plus years is all of a sudden not good enough. I blame most of it on the media hyping these new loads as the holy grail. A lot of magazines all of a sudden require higher power loads for any game, and with that question, I ask myself if the game has gotten any tougher..I don't think so.

A shot well placed will put down the game.

Them #3 Fasteel 3" Kent's in my 20ga pump were an eye opener the first time I snap-fired at a jack and my cheek got a slap... Shocked Game on! Surpised how well it rolled stuff at 40y+ Not sure if it's effective after that or if it peters out. Gotta be a clobberer in 12ga fixed breech and 3 1/2". I'd need a gas gun for that load. That's gotta be a pounding for you guys in blinds if ya aint got a gasser.

I like all this new "magic" ammo that's comin' out. Why? Makes the obsolete stuff that works just as good fer me go on the clearance table...short of shootin' at mile high passer's I aint missed yet cuz of ammo. Sometimes I caint hit the side of a barn... So gimme that 3$ box of last years ammo over thar!

I very strongly suggest staying away from Remington's 12 ga. Hyper-Sonic Steel Shot loads!!!
