In our area the mating season begins as early as the first of the year and by the end of February is mostly concluded. Now that those coyotes have that out of their system, more regular patterns in responding to calls returns. Spring is a great time for calling coyotes.

Our two day calling trip yielded nine coyotes, four for me and five for my son. We had a half day followed by a full day. Mud, streams and more mud were our typical challenges. Weather was perfect with little or no wind.

This time of year we like to spot them with binoculars and move to their upwind side. This assures that there will be coyotes within calling range. The 15X45 binoculars are amazing as we can glass extreme distances and observe coyotes that are coming out to sun themselves. We were calling at around 5,000' amongst the pinons and juniper which provide nice cover for approaching dogs. Our choice of rifles were unique for this trip.

I used a Ruger No1 45-70 w/ 405gr cast bullets @1,357 fps and my son had an AR15 in 458 SOCOM as well as borrowing my 348Win. Usually our maximum visability was 120yds and coyotes fell to all three rifles. We switched rifles a coupla times and agreed that big bores are amazingly effecitve rounds.

Next trip planned is for April and Southwestern Utah, a favorite annual
hunt and usually the last of the season. Coyote populations seem increasing in all areas.

Hunt often, and enjoy the remaining season.
