Impala kills bear
By CRYSTAL LEE/Democrat staff Writer
Article Created: 04/26/2007 02:29:13 PM PDT

A young bear was hit and killed by a car early Thursday morning on southbound Interstate 5 just north of Highway 113 in Woodland.
The accident occurred at around 5:30 a.m. when a black bear ran from the right shoulder of the freeway toward the center, California Highway Patrol Officer Terry Whitney said. The bear was hit by a Chevy Impala in the far left lane and thrown into the center median out of traffic, he said.

The car's airbags deployed and the driver was reportedly uninjured, he said.

Traffic flow continued normally and Caltrans took the bear to an undisclosed location, he said.

Whitney said he would guess the bear was about 2 to 3 years old based on size and probably came from somewhere near Rumsey.

This is an uncommon accident, Whitney said. He said there were no reports of residents seeing the bear in town before it wandered onto the freeway.

This is about 3 miles from where I live in a town of about 60,000. If we keep going into their land to build our houses they are going to come into our to find theirs.

Also I carring a pepper spry that says it can stop a bear. My friends picked on me saying I was doing over kill, this morning I decided I was just planing way ahead. Very Happy

A friend's daughter lives in a small community in the mountains. Night before last, she heard a noise in her shed, and went out to see what it was.
It was a reasonable sized black bear and it took a box of painting supplies.(?) Go figure. One of her neighbors told her " We DON"T have bears, it has to be raccoons." Angie got a picture. Showin's way better than tellin". Very Happy

Tink,
Have you ever heard the joke about the ankle bracelet bell, bears and pepper spray? It ends something like; "just look for the bear poop that contains little pieces of sneakers an ankle bracelet with a little bell and smells like pepper."

Try starter fluid, it works on dogs like magic so should be effective on bears as well.
Ed

When I worked in mineral exploration on diamond drills, we used this grease on the outsides of the drill rods. It's like axle grease, basically...reduces rod vibration in the drill hole. It came in 70 pound tin cans. Bears used to punch into the cans and eat it like it was honey. They love the stuff. I walked up on a black bear one time sitting on his hind quarters with one paw up above his head and the grease just dripping down in a long string into his mouth and his other paw jammed down into the pail getting more. He was pretty happy so my partner and I just walked really quiet around him and went on to the drill.

Hay the pepper spry was bought for the rapest that was running around my college campus and for dogs. As for starter fluid if it came in a little canaster like the pepper srpy than I'll change over until then this is what I have.

And learned the hard way not to see how strong it is by sprying it into kitchen sink. I think we went out for dinner that night. Confused

It may not be very long before you can buy the smaller cans.
