Not a bad article. Worth the read.

I like the rule of thumb:
30 fps change in velocity for every 10 degrees of temperature change.

An advantage for a detachable mag. A hunter can carry the mag inside their jacket where the bullets stay near the temperature of most of off-season shooting.

Slim- rule of thumb works if we all have the same thumb... I chose 8208 XBR to make that number even smaller. W748 might even have a bigger thumb than 30 fps on the hot end.. if what you are shooting requires that level of precision, you should know what your load does in your rifle.

That said...with your WOA shooting 77 smk's, even if your velocity changes 50 fps your difference in drop is less than a click (0.22moa) at 300 yards and only 0.73moa at 600... I have a hard time holding MOA with the iron sights at 600 so i would not see the difference.

Thanks Dawdad. I was thinking about my next elk hunt in November. I use IMR4350 in my .270. It could be below freezing and the altitude as high as 8000'. I want to be prepared for a longer range shot. I'd like to keep that 60 to 100 fps if I can. Plus keeping one more variable under control (cartridge temp) would reduce variation. There are some loads for 8208 XBR for my .270 but it seems not to be that efficient in the .270, giving about 200 fps less in velocity compared to IMR4350. Varget is supposed to be pretty stable with temp changes which is what I use in my .223.
